A Typical Excursion Logbook Entry

Wednesday, May 27, 1981. 1:30 PM.

Very cloudy day, heavy and damp (16 Celsius). Mosquitoes galore!

Having spent the morning climbing the Secret Mountains, I stop for rest on top of Castle Hill. After lunch, I will move on northward and try to reach Grover Peak by supper time. According to my map, it is a distance of only 8 kilometers but, I will have to continue along a hilly trail and ford two heavy flowing streams. I can see Grover Peak from here, and a little to the East, the chimneys of Raintown tower through the haze. With a little luck, I will be there by tomorrow night.

The trail I did this morning was beautiful. I ran through a cedar forest with very tall trees, and very little undergrowth. I saw a white-tailed deer, and later on a beaver dam while passing alongside Silver Pond. Giant yellow water lilies covered most of the pound and bull-frogs were sunning on the leaves now that the sun had come out.

I had breakfast in a small village called Rubberbell. There must be ten houses at most there, including a quaint snack-bar! Most of the people were staring at me when I walked down the only street. They must have asked themselves who I was and where I was coming from! The men were all wearing high black hats with flowers on them! The waitress at the snack-bar was very nice, and offered me a big piece of cranberry cake (a local specialty). Her name is Karinila, but it took me a while to understand it properly because of the accent of this region.

Now it's your turn!
